Jarrett Helderman and Ethan Hoffeditz

(GREENE CO.) - 18-year-old Ethan Hoffeditz and 16-year-old Jarrett Helderman, both students at White River Valley, were presented the Eagle Scout Award.

Eagle Scout is the highest advancement rank in Boy Scouting. In 2012 only seven percent of Scouts achieved the rank.

They now belong to a select group of men who earned that distinction, some of whom have gone on to a career such as astronaut, president, member of the United States Supreme Court, or Academy Award-winning film director.

Scouts must complete a total of 21 merit badges and complete an Eagle Scout Service Project before they may obtain their new rank. They must help other people with a project that benefits any religious institution, school, or the community. The Scout is required to plan, develop, and give leadership to others in his service project.

Helderman led a group to strip down and paint all the playground equipment at Lyons Park.

Hoffeditz did research and made a sign for the Morgan-Ilene Cemetery just south of Lyons. The sign included names of those buried there, that no longer had headstones. He feels that even if the graves are unmarked they still needed to be remembered.

Helderman plans on becoming a police officer or doing something in the criminal justice field.

Hoffeditz plans to attend college in Evansville and plans to have a dual major in political science and business management. He then plans to attend law school.

Both Hoffeditz and Helderman were formerly in Troop 401 out of Lyons, but that troop folded at the beginning of this year.
