(BEDFORD) - The storm sewer renovation project on Lincoln Avenue near Sixth and Seventh streets is causing some concerns about traffic and access to businesses.

Mayor Shawna Girgis and her staff have contacted area businesses, as well as school and emergency services personnel about the traffic issues.

She anticipates the project will take about three months to complete. She says the project will address the issues of standing water and flooding and will ultimately benefit residents and businesses in the area. She knows this is an inconvenience, but the asks for patience and understanding.

The northbound lane of Lincoln Avenue is closed from Sixth to Seventh streets for the construction. Traffic is being detoured around the Stalker Apartments and back onto Lincoln Avenue. Girgis' concern is that motorists traveling north on Lincoln Avenue will disregard the detour and will choose to head north in the southbound lane, which will remain open, causing a dangerous situation.

Seventh Street is closed to through traffic because the southern portion of the project will be the first section completed. It will reopen once the first phase is done.

Sixth Street is now open, but it will close as the project progresses.

Signs are being put up on Lincoln Avenue to show drivers how to access businesses in the area.

Girgis noted that there is an alternative route from Lincoln Avenue to John Williams Boulevard to Norton Avenue that provides access to Hoosier Hills Credit Union and other businesses in the area.
