(JUDAH) - The Lawrence County Police Department and Marshall Township Volunteer Fire Department are investigating several fires that they believe were deliberately set.
According to Marshall VFD Chief Chad Hayes, firefighters were called to the intersection of Judah Logan and Logan Bottom road just after 7 p.m. Sunday.
When they arrived they found a pile of corn stalks, about 50 to 75- feet in diameter, on fire.
"The corn stalks had washed across the roadway and piled up off the side of the road. There are piles and piles of these corn stalks," says Hayes. We extinguished the fire and believed at that time someone had thrown a cigarette out the window, starting the fire."
But shortly after that call, Hayes received a call from the landowner reporting he believed the fires were set and that two more fires were burning.
Firefighters went back to the scene and found two more fires burning, about 500 feet from the original fire.
"These two fires were larger than the first," Hayes says. "Once they were extinguished, we called for an officer to investigate and take a report. There was no property damage with these fires," Hayes says. "But if the fires had gone unnoticed and spread into the woods we would of had a big problem."
