(BEDFORD) - Grant money will allow Fayetteville, Hatfield, Burris, West Washington and Springsville elementary schools to expand their after-school programs.
The grant from Hoosier Uplands Economic Development Corp will allow the schools to receive $275,000 in grant funds through the 21st Century Community Learning Centers after school program.
Throughout the state, approximately $11.1 million was awarded to 53 organizations serving 184 after-school sites. Medora Community Schools also received $200,000 for after-school programs.
Amanda Silverthorn, Hoosier Uplands 21st Century Community Learning Centers director, says the enrollment process begins in May and students are selected based on academic need and school referrals. The program allows students to receive more individualized attention, with a focus on literacy.
The Hoosier Uplands program will offer academic enrichment, tutoring, mentoring and homework help, as well as music, arts and sports activities. Literacy and other educational services will be offered to families of participating children.
The program will begin at all four sites on the first day of the 2014-2015 school year, serving 35 students per location. The program is offered from the time school is dismissed until 5:45 p.m.
