(OOLITIC) - The Oolitic Town Council voted Monday night to start sending out letters to homeowners who are not keeping their lawns mowed and those who need to clean up the junk out of their yards.
"There are several yards that have grass that is getting pretty high," says Council President Delvin Nikirk. "Something has got to be done now before this gets way out of hand. We live in a nice community and want people to want to live here and not see yards with high grass and junk in them."
Council members Bill Kendall and Charlie Luther agreed.
"I am tired of driving around town and seeing all the junk piled up," Kendall says. "Residents shouldn't have to put up with seeing that junk. No one wants to live in a junky community."
Clerk-Treasurer Jim Staley will begin sending out letters to residents this week.
"This has been a problem for a long time," Nikirk says. "It is something that just has to be done. They (residents) have left us with no other choice, but to pursue the matter legally."
Residents, after receiving the letters, will have three days to mow their lawns and 10 days to remove debris from their property. If not residents could face fines.
* Nirkirk signed the final paper work on the Safe Routes To School Project. No beginning date has been set on when Milestone will begin construction. Safe Routes to School will add sidewalks on the east side of Hoosier Avenue from Fourth Street to Ninth Street.
* Councilmen Charlie Luther and Bill Kendall volunteered to be on a committee to look at the town's ordinances and review which ones need updated. They have that task done and asked to have an executive meeting with other council members and the town attorney Greg Pittman to review their findings. That meeting will take place on May 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall. Once all the ordinances are reviewed, the town plans to purchase new code books for town officials and for public use.
* The Eagles Auxiliary requested to hold a roadblock this Saturday. The money will be used to support Camp Riley. Last year the group raised $250,000 to purchase a surgical ambulance for Riley Hospital.
* Lawrence County Clerk Treasurer Paula Stewart requested Staley ask the council if they would be interested in claiming a small piece of property that has been on the county tax sale for several years. The property is on Lafayette Avenue, located between the guard rail and the creek, south of the bridge. Council members agreed the town had no use for the small piece of land and declined to take ownership.
* The council voted to grant a building permit to a resident in the 1000 block of Lafayette Avenue to build a breeze way between his home and garage and to build a car port on the side of his garage.
* The council approved Staley attending the Indiana League Of Municipality of Clerk Treasurer training in French Lick. Staley told the council that he is required to attend the State Board of Account called meetings. The training is from June 8-12.
* Oolitic Festival Committee President Glenn Gross reported the festival committee raised $500 at their pancake breakfast fund raiser. Now they are working on their Golf Scramble at Otis Park Golf Course on Saturday, May 10. Four-person teams can sign up for $200 and by calling Gross at 275-6605 or Vice President Ray Lindsey at 675-1379 or Dink Morrison, event coordinator at 279-5813.
* Because the next schedule council meeting falls on Memorial Day, the council voted to have their meeting on May 27 at 6:30 p.m.
