(WASHINGTON) - Logan Evans was sentenced to 45 years in prison for the murder of Devan Burris.
Evans pleaded guilty to murder in February of shooting 17-year-old Burris on Dec. 6, 2013. Evans has maintained he did not mean to shoot Burris.
Burris will never see his child. His girlfriend Kelly Fisher is expecting to deliver a baby girl on June 8. His mother wrote a letter to Daviess Superior Court Judge Dean Sobecki:
"Without his laughter and goofy way he showed his love, my home seems sad and empty and will never be the same," Tammy wrote.
The Washington Times Herald reports that the mother asked the judge to sentence Evan to the maximum term and that the sentence be served at a facility for the "worst of criminals, murderers and violent offenders."
While Evans did not speak during the hearing, his attorney Tim Demotte made the court aware of a letter his mother, Sheila Evans, filed with the court. In the letter, Sheila said her son was not a murderer, and that everyone that was in the parking lot of the Ebenezer Baptist Church that night was in the wrong.
Prosecutor Dan Murrie said after the sentencing that the case was "an unfortunate example of what could happen when individuals get involved with illegal drugs."
19-year-old Lucas Benjamin of Washington was sentenced to 30 years in prison in connection with the shooting death of 17-year-old Devan Burris.
Benjamin pleaded guilty to charges of assisting a criminal and attempted dealing in meth as part of a negotiated plea agreement.
Charges of conspiracy to commit murder were dismissed.
Benjamin was with Evans near the Ebenezer Baptist Church on Oak Grove Road to do a drug deal when that deal went wrong.
According to police, the two men went to the church to sell Burris $100 worth of meth. The two borrowed a Dodge Intrepid owned by Shawna Campbell to go to the church.
During the drug deal, Benjamin alleges Burris and another man grabbed him by the hood of his jacket and tried to pull him out the car. Benjamin says the man had a gun pointed at his face and began hitting him.
He told police as he was being pulled from the car, he heard a gunshot and then everyone began screaming.
Benjamin told police Evans did not intend to shoot anyone, but was trying to scare them. But Campbell told police the two had told her hours before the drug deal that the men were going to take "Burris hunting" which she took as they were going to shoot him.
Burris was then taken, by someone, to the emergency room at Daviess Community Hospital and dumped out of the vehicle where he died.
Two others charged in relation to the shooting are also facing court proceedings.
