(NEEDMORE) - According to Marshall Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Chad Hayes, a fire that destroyed a home at 418 Kentucky Hollow Road March 31st started after a resident had been smoking on her front porch and tossed her butt into some mulch.

The State Fire Marshal Matt Wells and Assistant Chief Jason Martin investigated the cause of the fire. They determined, the fire started after a cigarette was disgarded.

Volunteer Firefighters from Indian Creek, Marshall Township, Oolitic, Pleasant Run, Perry, Shawswick and the U.S. Forest Service responded. The American Red Cross, a Seals ambulance crew and TOPES were also on the scene.

When Oolitic VFD Chief Ted Maze arrived on the scene the fire was bellowing out of the basement area of the two-story home. The home is owned by Don Wever and was being rented by Dustin and Chandra Holbook.

While firefighters battled the house fire home they also battled five separate field fires that burned more than five acres of land.
