Dream Playhouse Auction Raises $30,000 For Boys & Girls Club

(BEDFORD) - The Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County earned $30,000 at the Dream Playhouse auction.

One highlight of the evening Friday was when thirteen people pooled $13,000 to buy a playhouse and donate it to a child selected at random from 13 students nominated by area teachers.

Michelle Woodward, Lawrence County prosecutor, representing the 13, purchased the playhouse built by the Friends of the Club.

Each of the 13 donated 1,000 to purchase the playhouse, which is modeled after a little red schoolhouse. The new owner of the playhouse is Kaulin Murphy, a student at Shawswick Middle School. Woodward's son, Karter West, drew Murphy's name from among 13 nominated by area schools.

Another highlight was when Chief Professional Officer Kyle Brown announced the Boys & Girls Club is the recipient of a grant from the Boys and Girls Club of America, along with Lowe's Home Improvement. The grant will be used to create a teen center at the Thornton building on 16th Street that was gine ti the Thornton Memorial Boys Club.

The playhouse built by the Bedford firefighters, modeled after the Northside fire station on Lincoln Avenue, sold for $5,600 to Doug Kellams.

Hoosier Hills Credit Union staff members purchased the playhouse donated by the Spring Mill FOP Lodge 172 for $4,000.

Bedford Ford Lincoln purchased the Lions Club house for another $4,000 with the plans to raffle it from their Quick Lane location in order to raise money for the upcoming Ugly Duck Derby fundraiser

The total from the playhouses was $26,600. Three people donated $1,000 each, and several others donated $100 each after the auction bringing the total to $30,000. Before auction, the firefighters' house was chosen as the grand champion by judges for the second year in a row. The Lions Club house was named best designed and honored as the people's choice.
