Last updated on Monday, April 14, 2014

(MITCHELL) - Steve Dorsett was named Citizen of the Year at the Greater Mitchell Chamber of Commerce’s annual dinner.

Dorsett serves as the principal of Burris Elementary School in Mitchell. Dorsett has given his life to the children of the Mitchell community, Dwight Dunbar, president of the chamber, said while bestowing the honor to Dorsett in the Lakeview Room at Spring Mill State Park. Dorsett, who was raised in Mitchell and graduated from Mitchell High School in 1971, has been working in the school system for 38 years. He's been the principal at Burris for 18 of those years. Before that, he taught history and sponsored a history club.

When he's not at school, he might be found at Woodville Baptist Church, where he has taught Sunday school and been a deacon for 27 years. Dorsett, in his spare time, also helps with LIFE's Blessing, formerly Blessings in a Backpack, and serves on the board of directors for Lawrence InterFaith Endeavors.

Gary Rayhill, who has served as the chairman of the Persimmon Festival parade for the past several years, received the volunteer of the year award.

Rayhill, a U.S. Army veteran, takes a week off work from his job at Crane each year to help with the Persimmon Festival, shows up every morning of the festival and always helps tear down at night. He's been known to set up bleachers, help attendees and support the work of the festival chairmen in a variety of ways.

The Business of the Year honor, was awarded to Living Well Home Care, a division of the Southern Indiana Center for Independent Living, which was started by Albert Tolbert in 1995 to assist those with disabilities.

Since the home care segment of the organization was started in 2001, it has grown by leaps and bounds.

The seven women who work in the offices of Living Well Home Care share their success through a variety of volunteer endeavors with service in their churches, schools and the community of Mitchell.
