(BROWN CO.) - Indiana Conservation Officers made a water rescue in Brown County Wednesday night.
According to Conservation officers, 51-year-old Melissa Shaffer, of New Haven, was travelling on Grandview Road when her Ford Explorer stalled in high water just south of Bellsville Pike.
Shaffer and her 12-year-old son and his 11-year-old friend were stranded.
The two young boys were able to climb onto the top of the vehicle through the sunroof, however Shaffer was not able to exit the vehicle.
When first responders arrived on scene around 8 p.m. the water was at the vehicles headlights.
Indiana Conservation Officer Joe Tenbarge was able to put on his dry suit and floatation device and use a safety rope and wade out to the stranded vehicle.
Tenbarge carried the two boys to safety and then assisted Shaffer through the water to dry land.
In the time it took to get the victims to safety, the water had risen to cover the hood of the Explorer.
Additional units on the scene were Brown County Sheriff's Department and Nashville Volunteer Fire Department.
Indiana Conservation Officers remind all travelers that flash flood waters can rise very rapidly and a road that was passable a short time ago may not be passable again. If you cannot see the roadway through the water do not attempt to drive through it.
