Bystanders Save Teen From Drowning At Spring Mill Inn

Last updated on Monday, April 21, 2014

(MITCHELL) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a near drowning that occurred last Saturday night at the Spring Mill State Park Inn.

Just before 9 p.m., 13-year-old Riley Saylor of Ohio City, OH was swimming with his family at the Inn's pool when he was discovered at the bottom of the pool.

Saylor's 30 year-old cousin, Sarah Rumschlag of Decatu, was nearby and swam to the bottom of the pool and quickly brought him to the surface. Another pool patron, Ann Lott of Madison, saw Rumschlag struggling and quickly assisted.

An off-duty nurse, Shelly Miller of Roanoke, quickly took control and initiated CPR with the help of Amy Crouch of Fort Wayne.

As a direct result of their heroic efforts, Saylor was partially revived before being transported by EMS personnel to IU Health Hospital in Bloomington where he later made a full recovery.

Indiana Conservation Officer Chad Mills stated that, "these ladies' selfless actions no doubt saved a young man's life tonight, and they are to be commended." Assisting agencies at the scene included SEALS Ambulance Service and Marion Township First Responders.

The incident is still under investigation. No foul play is suspected.
