Body Of Mother And Son Pulled From White River

Last updated on Saturday, April 5, 2014

(GOSPORT) - A mother and her 5-year-old son were found dead late Saturday afternoon after the car they were passengers in was submerged in White River floodwaters near Gosport in Monroe County.

Jana Payton, 24, and her son Bronson Liggett, were in a Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Payton's bestfriend, when the vehicle left a gravel section on Moon Road and Sand College Road and went into White River. Officers are not releasing the name of the driver.

According to Indiana Conservation Officer Angela Goldman, the driver attempted to back the car out of the water, but the attempt failed. The vehicle was swept away and the three climbed to the roof of the car.

The driver then swam to shore where she went to the nearest house and called 911.

Payton and Liggett couldn't swim.

Monroe County police were called to the scene at 1:45 a.m. Saturday and were able to do a cursory search, but it was difficult in the dark.

Goldman says conservation officers and Owen County Rescue joined the search using airboats and divers to search for Payton and Liggett.

Indiana Conservation Officers found the body of 5-year-old Bronson Liggett at about 4:20 p.m. in the floodwaters and the body of Jana Payton, 24, was located about 4:40 p.m.
