Crews Repairing Collapsed Sewer Pipe In Thornton Park Parking Lot

Last updated on Wednesday, April 9, 2014

(BEDFORD) - Bedford City crews are working to repair a collapsed drainage pipe blamed for causing a large hole in the parking lot of Thornton Park.

Bedford Utility Director Misty Adams says the extent of the damage is not yet known, but does know there is damage to a 15-inch clay tile pipe.

"We know a storm sewer collapsed," Adams says. "It could have been that way for a while, and with all the rain we have water was trying to run through the pipe causing the ground to wash away."

The hole is at the entrance of the Thornton Park parking lot.

Crews have dug out the hole in order to repair the pipe. Once that is done the hole will be filled with gravel and then dirt and then the lot will be patched.

Adams says the area will remain closed to traffic until the work is finished.
