(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man was arrested after Bedford police officers were called about a domestic fight at 18th and G streets Sunday afternoon.

According to Chief Dennis Parsley, while on the way to the scene, officers were flagged down by a vehicle in the 600 block of 18th Street. In the vehicle was a man and the female victim.

"They were told to go to the police station and wait for officers," Parsley says. "Officers continued to the area of the fight and found a man holding another man on the ground and others standing in the area to make sure the man didn't get away. Officers then called for an ambulance to make sure everyone was okay at the scene."

Officers then got 21-year-old John Burton off the ground and searched him.

"They found he was in possession of brass knuckles," Parsley says. "They again put Mr. Burton on the ground until they could get him handcuffed. During a search of his pockets they found a smoking device that tested positive for marijuana residue. Mr. Burton was then checked by the ambulance crew to make sure he suffered no injuries from the confrontation with the group and was arrested."

That is when Burton began yelling and screaming at officers. He was placed in the back of the police car and then began kicking at the doors and windows.

"Again officers had to physically restrain Mr. Burton, who continued to fight with officers and after several warnings was finally tased," Parsley says. "The ambulance was called back to the scene to again check Mr. Burton's condition."

According to witnesses at the scene, Burton had repeatedly hit the female.

"The female refused to give police a statement," Parsley says. "But in this case it was not needed and Mr. Burton was arrested and taken to jail."

Burton is facing charges of resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, possession of drug paraphernalia and marijuana and battery.
