(BEDFORD) - The John Wallace chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, sponsors of the DAR Good Citizens program,and Indiana DAR and NSDAR Good Citizen Scholarship program at Bedford North Lawrence and Mitchell High Schools in Lawrence County announce Madelyn K. Ueltschi and Jamie Durbin as the 2014 DAR Good Citizens.
The qualities of a DAR Good Citizen are dependability, service to community and others, leadership and patriotism. The scholarship portion of the program consists of a written essay.
Ueltschi, a senior at BNL, is the daughter of Ted and Trish Ueltschi. Durbin, a senior at MHS, is the daughter of James and Melissa Durbin.
Ueltschi is secretary of the National Honor Society and French Club. She is a member of Star Strong, Beta Club and Art Club, and is a member of the BNL Prom Committee. She has assisted at Special Olympics and has received awards in French, biology and math. She has also been a member of the BNL dance team and attended the Lugar Symposium in 2013.
She volunteers as an assistant coach for the Oolitic Middle School dance team and is a Springville Elementary School activities volunteer. As a member of the Free Methodist Church youth group, she volunteers in their "Big Sis" program and is a member of the praise team.
Ueltschi is also a member of the Popcorn Christian Church youth group. She is a "Between the Crowd" student leader and volunteers at Wonder Valley Christian Camp. She was a member of a clean-up crew for the Henryville tornado disaster in 2012. She has been employed at the Bedford Public Library for two years and her hobbies are piano, painting, drawing, ceramics, reading and dance.
She plans to enroll at Indiana Wesleyan University and major in mathematics education and fine arts.
Durbin is president of the Spanish Club and vice president of Students Against Destructive Decisions. She is a member of Science Club, Student Council, Fresh Start and National Honor Society. She has participated in band for four years. Her voice leads the students at MHS daily in the Pledge of Allegiance over the school intercom system.
Durbin is a 13-year member of Girl Scouts and at her church has taught Sunday School for preschool-aged children and participated in trunk or treat. She has been a member of Lawrence County Ambassadors, has volunteered at local hospitals, the library and Spring Mill State Park. She has tutored middle school students in math, English and science.
She plans to attend the University of Evansville and graduate with a bachelor's degree in biology and pre-medicine. She then plans to attend the Indiana University Medical School to become a psychiatrist.
The DAR Good Citizens will be recognized at a 6 p.m. awards banquet on March 20 at the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 139 N. Eighth St., Mitchell. American history essay winners also will be honored.
