UPDATED: Two Injured After Being Hit By Intoxicated Driver

(WASHINGTON) - Two pedestrians were injured after they were hit by an intoxicated driver Sunday.

According to Washington police, officers received a 911 call reporting that 33-year-old Bridgette Bess and 34-year-old James A. Hubbard were walking along East National Highway near McDonald's when they were hit by a vehicle and the driver then fled. The accident happened at 3:09 a.m.

They were on the north side of the road when the driver of a Chevrolet Malibu struck the two.

Bess fell into the ditch and Hubbard landed on the hood of the Malibu. When the car stopped 120 feet later, Hubbard fell into the ditch.

The driver, 23-year-old Taylor Helms fled the scene turning north on Hillside Drive and according to the accident report, called her mother. She then returned to the scene of the accident.

Bess complained of arm pain while Hubbard was unable to get up. Both were taken to Daviess Community Hospital. Bess and Hubbard were then transferred to St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville. According to a hospital spokeswoman, Bess is listed in fair condition. Hubbard is listed in serious condition.

Helms was given a breathalyzer test at the scene and blew .16 percent.. Another test measured her blood-alcohol content at .28 percent, more than three times the legal level of .08 percent.

Helms was arrested and is facing two counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious injury, operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person and operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a blood-alcohol level of .15 percent or greater.

Helms was taken to the Daviess County Security Center and then released on $9,000 bond.
