Schools To Look At Emergency Preparedness

Last updated on Wednesday, March 26, 2014

(BEDFORD) - The North Lawrence Community School board voted to hire a structural engineer to assess the emergency preparedness locations for students and staff at Dollens Elementary School and Oolitic Middle School.

The request was submitted by Mark Vice, curriculum director and a member of the Lawrence County Safe School Commission.

An engineer has agreed to work for $160 per hour, with a $2,000 cap established for the service.

Vice and other members were at the schools in Oolitic doing a safety audit when a tornado drill was conducted.

During that drill, officials noticed that some areas became congested as students made their way to designated safety zones.

Vice expressed concerns that if a tornado should strike, it could be difficult, given the flow of students for everyone to get to a safe place in time.

Vice added an engineer's assessment should help in formulating a more effective safety plan.
