(BEDFORD) - The North Lawrence Community school board will host a special meeting March 13 on the proposed changes to the school bus routes for Fayetteville and Needmore schools.

School board member Gary Holmes asked that the decision on the school bus routes be postponed Thursday so teachers and administrators could work out some details. Lawrence Transportation Director Darren Waggoner asked for the change in the routes to eliminate double routes.

Currently a bus picks up children kindergarten through fifth and then a second bus drives the same route picking up grades six through 12.

Waggoner proposed that Fayetteville Elementary School become a hub for all the Fayetteville buses. Elementary students would get off the buses there and then middle school and high school students would take buses to their buildings. The same process would happen at Needmore.

But that process would extend the school day at Needmore by 35 minutes and at Fayetteville 40 to 45 minutes.

School Board Member Kristen Collier says extending the school day would be taxing on kindergartners and there was no plan for what these students would do while at the schools.

There were also concerns with having kindergarten students on the bus with high school students, because of profanity and other possible negative influences.

Board Member Tracy Bailey argued that changes in bus routes will have to be made eventually to control costs.
