Orleans Winter Guard Headed To State Finals

Last updated on Friday, March 14, 2014

(ORLEANS) - The Orleans High School Winter Guard will travel to Mooresville High School Saturday to compete in state finals competition.

The group will perform at 10:40 a.m.

This year's program is titled "Life is a Canvas" and is based on individuality, opportunity and life fulfillment.

A description of the Guard's show explains, "Members are similar, yet unique, with splatter-painted uniforms and individual hair and makeup designs of their choice." The program begins with a white tarp -- a blank canvas -- and as the music progresses and changes, the members add color with flags and "paint the canvas" by pulling long strips of fabric onto the tarp at different angles. The description further reads, "At the end, when all the color is out members pose at different levels with the fabrics creating a 3D portrait with the closing statement: Life is a canvas. How will you paint yours?"

Following is a rundown of the group's performances this year:
• Feb. 1: Pike Central, silver rating, fifth place.
• Feb. 8: Terre Haute South, gold rating, fourth place.
• Feb. 15: Columbus East, gold rating, second place.
• Feb. 22: Winter Guard of Indiana Indianapolis Regional Preliminaries, second place.
• Feb. 23: Winter Guard of Indiana Indianapolis Regional Finals, second place.
• March 1: Northview competition, gold rating, third place.

The Winter Guard competes locally in the Indiana High School Color Guard Association in Class AA, and this year competed for the first time in the Winter Guard International Regional.

Benefit show

The Orleans Winter Guard will be host to a performance arts benefit for Melissa Harris at 6 p.m. Friday.

The benefit will take place at the high school's new gymnasium. Admission will be $2. Concessions will be available.

Performances will be provided by the Orleans Bulldog Regiment and by Winter Guard groups from Southwestern, Henryville, Crawford County, Paoli and Bedford North Lawrence high schools. The Orleans group also will perform.

Harris,a member of the team, was diagnosed with leukemia in February 2013. As part of the benefit, the Winter Guard will celebrate Harris' progress in fighting the disease. Harris has been unable to physically participate in Winter Guard for the past year, but still has been included by attending practices and performances. Proceeds from the benefit will go to Harris' family to help pay the cost of attending the marching band's upcoming Florida trip, where Harris will perform with the group for the first time in more than a year.
