Oolitic Girls Basketball Team Takes County Championship

Last updated on Tuesday, March 4, 2014

(OOLITIC) - The Oolitic Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball team took the county championship with a perfect season.

The Lady Bearcats got past Shawswick, 46-44, in opening-round play before defeating Bedford, 52-34, in the title game.

The win over Shawswick was the highlight for the Cats, who avenged a pair of losses to the Lady Farmers in recent years.

Shawswick had defeated Oolitic in the sixth and seventh-grade county tourneys says Oolitic coach Lenny Miller.

Tristin Day led the way with 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Marissa Maddox also tossed 14 points and came up with two steals.

Barnes and Ashlynn Waldrip each added seven points, while Hailey Miller and Melissa Lewis tossed in two points apiece.

The Cats jumped out to a 16-4 first-quarter lead against the Cutters in the championship game and took a commanding 28-11 edge to the half before cruising to the county title.

Waldrip scored a team-high 17 points and had three assists, while Day finished with 14 points, three assists and three blocked shots for the county champs.

The Wildcats capped off a perfect season with a 13-0 record.

Maddox added five points and two assists, while Barnes had three points and two steals, and Jasmine Heckard tallied two points and five rebounds.

Sarah Brewster and Kelsei Keith each chipped in with two points and an assist, while Haley Magness and Ashley Phillips each tossed in two points.
