(BEDFORD) - Cheryl Coon is the newest Forest Botanist for the Hoosier National Forest
"I've enjoyed getting out in the forest and seeing some projects and as things green up," Coon says. "I'm looking forward to seeing the unique species you have in southern Indiana and meeting some of our partners."
Coon is filling the position previously held by Kirk Larson.
Though her office will be in Bedford, her duties will be forest-wide.
"The Ecosystems Team on the Hoosier does a lot of great restoration projects," she added. "I look forward to being a part of their good work."
Originally from northeast Ohio, Coon grew up in Jefferson, Ohio, and obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology from Hiram College and her Master of Science Degree in Plant Biology from the University of Maryland. Her first job was as a seasonal with the National Park Service at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
Coon later worked in Mesa Verde National Park and with the Forest Inventory Analysis crews in the states of Oregon and Washington. Ten years ago she returned to the east to work for the Wayne National Forest in southeast Ohio as their Forest botanist.
When not working, Coon enjoys gardening, hiking, quilting and traveling. She currently lives in Oolitic.
