National Gypsum To Close Shoals Mine

Last updated on Tuesday, March 18, 2014

(SHOALS) - National Gypsum will close their Shoals mine in August.

According to the Loogootee Tribune the facility will be transitioned to a plant making drywall boards from by-product gypsum.

The Shoals mine is the only one of the National Gypsum's six mines in the United States to be closed.

A spokesman says the 21 miners affected by the closure will have the opportunity to move into other positions at the plant.

The report says, National Gypsum is spending $15 million to convert and modernize the Shoals plant. After the conversion the plant will begin making drywall board, using by-product gypsum.

The National Gypsum mine at Shoals has been in operation since 1955.
