Learn To Identify Trees In Winter

Last updated on Friday, March 7, 2014

(BEDFORD) - Join Dale Weigel from the White River RC&D Forestry Committee on Thursday, March 20 and Saturday, March 22 to hone your skills in identifying trees in winter. People are invited to attend one or both sessions of the workshop.

Thursday's session will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and will be held in the Bedford Public Library at 1323 K Street in Bedford. Saturday's session will be held on the Hoosier National Forest, at Tincher Pond on US 50 west of Bedford, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Weigel explains that in Thursday's session he will go over ways to easily tell trees apart without their leaves. As a forester with 35 years of experience Weigel has learned many tricks to identify trees. He will bring twig samples and people can examine buds and twigs of common trees to compare the different species.

On Saturday participants will meet at the Tincher Pond parking lot. Weigel will take people on a foray through the woods identifying trees and showing people the differences in bark, twigs, and other characteristics. If people are unable to make theThursday session, they are still welcome to attend on Saturday.

The workshop is free, however we would appreciate pre-registration so we have enough handouts. Please call Teena Ligman at 812-276-4757 for more information or to register for the workshop.
