(JASONVILLE) - A long-time police officer Jim Gadberry recently took the reins of the Jasonville Police Department.

The Greene County Daily World reports that Gadberry, a 21 year veteran of the department, was promoted to the position of chief when Rick Van Horn retired after 34 years of service.

Gadberry will be working alongside newly-promoted Assistant Chief Ryan Van Horn.

Gadberry has a list of goals he'd like to accomplish as chief which include a high standard of services and protection, the best equipment and training for officers, an open door policy and plans on bumping up the police department's presence at the school.

As a reserve officer, much of Gadberry's focus was on the children in the community. he planned several safety fairs and introduced a gun safety program to the schools and churches teaching the dangers of unattended guns. As a reserve officer, he was also active in the Jasonville Juvenile Task Force, which focused on children in the community and ensuring their success.

In 2002, his training turned towards the use, process and selling of illegal drugs. He then became a member of the South Central Drug Task Force.

Gadberry along with then-Assistant Chief Don Fish, created the city's first K9 unit in 2003.

Also during that time, he became a primary instructor through the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and was lead instructor and in charge of the Jasonville Police Department's training.

In July 2006, Gadberry was promoted to the position of assistant chief -- a position he maintained until being promoted to chief.

Gadberry says his focus once again turned to the children of the community in 2010 by completing the "finding words/child first" forensic interviewers training though the national association to prevent sexual abuse of children and the Indiana Child Advocacy Centers Coalition.

Gadberry is the son of Linda and the late James (Jack) Gadberry. He has two children, Joie and Kaleb.
