IU Wide Receiver Isaac Griffith Out Of Induced Coma

Last updated on Thursday, March 20, 2014

(FLORIDA) - Indiana redshirt freshman wide receiver Isaac Griffith is out of his medically-induced coma and breathing on his own without a ventilator, according to his father, Shannon Griffith.

Isaac's father, Shannon Griffith, says doctors removed his son Isaac from a ventilator and brought him out of the coma. He tweeted that his son "woke up well and is breathing on his own." He is also responding to his name and moving his hands and feet.

Griffith's father says the family is "still in a marathon" for their son's recovery, with "little battles in front of us."

Isaac Griffith, a wide receiver on the IU roster, almost drowned near Sarasota after getting caught in a rip current. Friends, including teammate Nick Stoner of Greenwood, helped pull him to shore.

The sheriff's department said Griffith was drinking with those friends before going swimming, but IU student Mitch McCune, who performed CPR, told ESPN the group had not been drinking.
