(BEDFORD) - Students who ride a bus to Fayetteville, Needmore or Springville elementary schools will see changes in bus routes next school year.
The North Lawrence school board voted to adopt a "hybrid" approach to getting students to and from school. Bus drivers will run a single bus route in the mornings, with students in kindergarten through grade 12 on buses together. Then in the afternoon, the current double bus routes, which separate younger and older students, will run.
As part of the hybrid plan, after the buses transporting all grade levels of students reaches the respective elementary schools, students board express buses to be taken to the middle schools and high schools.
Students at Heltonville and Shawswick elementary schools are already being transported using a single-busing plan.
In February, the board proposed single busing for both the morning and afternoon. But parents were not happy with that plan. So the proposal was tabled until a special meeting on Thursday, when the board voted to approve the alternate option.
Superintendent Gary Conner says the projected cost savings in going to the hybrid system would be about $166,000 per year. He added the NL's Transportation Fund is going to be reduced by about $200,000 per year.
