(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Highway Department should be able to start repairing the numerous pot holes as soon as the asphalt plants open.
Paving of county roads will not start until after school is out.
Superintendent Dave Holmes says crews are currently cold patching some pot holes.
"The roads are in terrible shape," Holmes says. "We are doing the best with can with cold patching, but we are not making much headway. Some of the roads we paved last year are all ready cracking."
Holmes says the asphalt plants should open next week if the weather is good.
Commissioner Bill Spreen says he traveled a lot of the county roads recently assessing the damage after a terrible winter.
"Roads are bad, and there's not a lot we can do about it right now," Spreen says. "On Williams-Huron road you can't travel 1,000 feet without hitting a major bad spot in the road. Residents are going to have to be patient and be aware we are addressing the issue."
All of the commissioners agreed that cutting down on salt use next year will help.
"I personally got lots of feedback," says Commissioner Chris May. "They didn't ask why, but when we were going to stop using salt. One hundred percent of the feedback was in favor of the cut back."
In other business:
Bob Grewe of Bernardin, Lochmueller and Associates asked permission to access county data to assist Mitchell in designing a comprehensive plan. Grewe is to contact 39 Degrees North about using the company's software.
Highway crews have been repairing ditches and replacing culverts throughout the county.
Bridge work on Bridge 70 on Mount Pleasant Road has slowed because of bad weather.
Michael Conley, architect for Architura, submitted a change order for the window replacements at the courthouse. The original figure of $777,157 was reduced to $767,657.
The commissioners also accepted a recommendation from Assessor April Stapp Collins to retain Reller's Southern Indiana Appraisal to handle trending chores for the county in 2014. Stapp explained two other companies that bids did not meet required specifications.
