Last updated on Tuesday, March 25, 2014

(UNDATED) - During the week of March 31-April 5, the Animal Care Clinic, Bedford Veterinary Medical Centre and Spring Mill Veterinary Service will offer heartworm testing at a reduced price.

Vets are encouraging pet owner to have their dogs tested.

Heartworm, according to the American Heartworm Society, is a parasitic roundworm spread from host to host through mosquito bites. A small thread-like worm, it can be fatal if not detected and treated early.

Veterinarians say, it is recommended to keep dogs on heartworm prevention medication year-round, because it only takes one mosquito bite to infect a dog.

To make an appointment for heartworm testing during that week, contact the individual clinics for information: Animal Care Clinic, 279-1516; Bedford Veterinary, 275-7501; or Spring Mill, 849-4525.
