(BLOOMINGTON) - The City of Bloomington Commission on the Status of Women is holding a women’s leadership event on Thursday, March 13 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, 401 N. Morton St.
This is an annual event, and this year's theme is "Social Justice: Women Take Action." The event offers a free opportunity to learn how to get involved and make a difference in our community.
Beginning with a reception at 5 p.m., participants can enjoy refreshments, network and learn more about getting involved with City of Bloomington Boards and Commissions, as well as other local agencies. Presentations will be offered on reproductive choice, marriage equality and increasing the minimum wage. There will also be an award presentation to the Commission's 2014 Emerging Leader, Debra Morrow.
The presenters and their topics include Patti Stauffer, Vice President for Public Policy, Strategy and Compliance for Planned Parenthood Indiana, regarding reproductive choice; Vi Simpson, former Indiana State Senator, regarding marriage equality; and Jessica Fraser from the Indiana Community Action Program, regarding increasing the minimum wage and its impact on women.
The 2014 Emerging Leader, Debra Morrow, has worked tirelessly to help others overcome their barriers to social mobility. Debra is the Community Services Coordinator at Middle Way House and places up to 300 volunteers annually. She is also a volunteer at New Leaf and works with women transitioning from jail to the community by providing them with information about housing, social services and employment. She has been instrumental in developing programs for the jail, including Christmas caroling, yoga classes and job readiness, and has been a strong advocate on behalf of all incarcerated women. Debra has volunteered at the Shalom Center and has been involved with local efforts to end homelessness. She is a volunteer with NET (Monroe County Chapter of Prevent Child Abuse Indiana) and is the Broadview Neighborhood Association President.
Co-sponsors of this event include AAUW of the Wabash Valley, City of Bloomington Commission on the Status of Women, City of Bloomington Community & Family Resources Department, City of Bloomington Office of the Clerk, Indiana University Women's Student Association, Middle Way House and Monroe County Women's Commission.
