Bloomington Seeks to Regulate Chain Restaurants Downtown

Last updated on Tuesday, March 11, 2014

(BLOOMINGTON) - The Bloomington planning commission started crafting an ordinance at their meeting Monday to regulate chain restaurants in the downtown area.

The city council last week passed a resolution that would make it harder for chain businesses to move into the area of the Courthouse Square Overlay and the University Village Overlay, which encompasses the Kirkwood Avenue and 4th Street Restaurant Districts.

The resolution is a scaled back version of a resolution Mayor Mark Kruzan initially proposed in 2009 that sought to restrict standardized establishments. That resolution was met with strong opposition and did not get beyond the discussion phase.

During the new debate, members of the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce questioned the resolution's legality, fairness and economic impact.
