Bloomfield Man Facing Forgery And Theft Charges

Last updated on Wednesday, March 26, 2014

(BLOOMFIELD) - A Bloomfield man is facing criminal charges after he allegedly stole checks issued to the Greene County Clerk’s office and cashed them.

According to Indiana State Police, Kraig Lucas is wanted on a bench warrant for two felony counts of forgery and two felony counts of theft.

ISP Detective Brad Stille received a report from a woman on February 26 reporting she was to receive money from the courts for restitution in the amount of $500 from a case where someone had broken into her vehicle. She alleged her ex-husband had received two checks from the clerk's office that were made payable to her, and that he had cashed them at Bloomfield State Bank.

A teller at the Eastern Heights branch of the bank told police they had cashed one of the checks and that Lucas told her his ex-wife had signed the back of the check.

Lucas allegedly admitted to signing the woman's name on the two checks, one for $475 and another for $20, and that he did not have the woman's permission to sign her name. But he told police that he felt some of the money belonged to him since the two were married at the time of the incident.

And Lucas allegedly says his ex-wife did receive some of the money from one of the checks - in the form of a child support payment he made to her.
