(BEDFORD) - A Seymour man was injured and flown by helicopter to Methodist Hospital for treatment following an accident early Sunday morning.
According to a Bedford Police report, officers were called to intersection of John Williams Boulevard and Ind. 37 at 12:07 a.m.
When police arrived, they found a 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis with heavy front end damage and the driver, 62-year-old Charles Moman, was trapped inside. According to police, Moman suffered internal injuries during the incident.
After being freed from the wreckage, Moman was flown by helicopter to Methodist Hospital for treatment.
A 2001 Hyundai Sonata was also sitting in the intersection, but the driver was gone.
Officers found a cell phone and a prescription bottle for a Jason Blackwell inside the vehicle.
The owner of the car, Steven Cowden was contacted.
Cowden told police that he received a call from Blackwell saying he had totaled the car and the driver of the other vehicle was unconscious and he had fled. Cowden gave police the number Blackwell called from and they were able to trace the call to an apartment.
When officers went to the apartment, they found Blackwell hiding in a closet.
Police say Blackwell smelled like he had been drinking alcohol, had red-glassy eyes and slurred speech. Officers offered to seek medical treatment for Blackwell because he had been involved in a serious accident, but Blackwell refused treatment.
Officers obtained a warrant to take a blood-alcohol test.
According to police, Blackwell refused to admit to driving the vehicle.
The following day, police again spoke the owner of the vehicle, who again told police that Blackwell had called him and admitted to crashing the car and fleeing the scene. He also told police that Blackwell had since called him and threatened him for "ratting him out."
The case has been forwarded to the Lawrence County Prosecutor's Officer and a warrant has been requested for Blackwell's arrest.
