(BEDFORD) - Bedford Police Capt. Jeremy Bridges and his canine Ciro placed third in the American Police Canine Association Winer k-9 sniff off last week in Nashville.

Mike Johnson, the president of the association and a Bedford Police officer, said the APCA holds the competition because there is not many training opportunities during the winter months.

Police dogs from Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky compete in the two-day event.

During the competition, teams of officers and dogs go through vehicles, buildings and canister phases where they have to find 15 locations where drugs are hidden. The dog has to alert the officer within 18 inches of where the drug is hidden. If the dog gives a false alert, it adds time to the final score.

Bridges has had Ciro, a 31/2-year-old Czech Shepherd, since 2011.
