(BEDFORD) - The Advanced Manufacturing program's goal is to train adults so they can move into jobs with higher pay and better benefits.

Katrina Jones, manager of the program for Ivy Tech, says advanced manufacturing is thriving in south-central Indiana.

Through the Advanced Manufacturing Program, she says a person can become a Certified Product Technician or receive a recognized qualification in manufacturing.

The training is in four modules: safety, maintenance awareness, quality and measurement, and manufacturing and production. Each of the four modules contains several points of emphasis.

The first round of classes has already started in Bloomington. But Ivy Tech is looking for more people to form future classes.

The cost is $2,600, but scholarships are available.

Duke Energy has provided funds for scholarships and several organizations have joined the partnership. Radius Indiana, the growth council, the Bedford Chamber of Commerce and WorkOne has signed on.

Several local employers are also helping like, PRD, Bedford Machine and Tool, General Motors, Metal Technologies and Bedford Recycling.

To be admitted to the program, a person must pass a drug screen. Regular attendance during the 140-hour course also is required. The sessions are based on lectures and Internet sessions. Participants will also visit and tour local manufacturing facilities.

The program is flexible to meet the needs of participants all ready employed.
