(BLOOMINGTON) - A fire Wednesday morning killed several dogs and cats and destroyed a home in southwest Monroe County.
When firefighters from Van Buren Township Fire Department arrived at the scene they could hear the dogs barking and rushed to save the animals from the home in the 3900 block of Sandstone Lane.
Firefighters freed two adult dogs from their kennels in a room off the garage and later found two puppies under debris from the collapsed roof. The dogs were taken by animal control officers to an area veterinarian.
Deputy Fire Chief Ed Terrell says firefighters attacked the blaze from a living room, but soon had to move outside when the ceiling started to collapse. The fire had engulfed the attic area and burned through the center of the home.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in about 90 minutes, but stayed on the scene most of the day extinguishing hot spots. Terrell did not have the exact number of pets that perished in the blaze.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but does not appear to be suspicious in nature.
Firefighters from Bloomington Township, Ellettsville, Perry-Clear Creek, Center Township and Eastern Greene and members of the Monroe County Red Cross assisted at the scene.
