Salvation Army Kettle Drive Falls Short Of Goal

Last updated on Monday, February 10, 2014

(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Salvation Army kettle drive and mail donations fell short for 2013. And that has Captain Donna Rose concerned.

The kettles raised $32,151, about $11,000 short of the $43,000 goal. The mail donations collected $28,229 which was $12,000 below goal.

Rose attributes the shortage to the weather. Because goals were not reached the Salvation Army will not be able to help as many people in 2014 and that is a concern.

This year at Christmas the Salvation Army helped provide gift cards, foods and gifts of clothing and toys to 294 families, 36 more families then in last year.

Rose says many families are struggling because they have been put in circumstances they didn't choose to be in and they have reached out to the Salvation Army this year for the first time. Rose says more single grandparents are raising children because their adult children are in jail.

Rose says she doesn't know what the shortage of funds will mean for the rest of the year, but the Salvation Army will do the best they can with what they have.
