Salem Marching Band Earns Top Honors At Statehouse

Last updated on Wednesday, February 26, 2014

(STATEHOUSE) -The Salem High School Marching Lions were honored at the Statehouse yesterday for their achievements at the Indiana State School Music Association’s (ISSMA) 2013 Scholastic B State Championship last October. The band was honored in House Concurrent Resolution (HCR) 5, authored by State Representative Steve Davisson (R-Salem).

Salem High School was able to compete in the new Scholastic B division, made up of smaller sized schools than the older category they were placed in. Since the size of the student body makes a large difference in the capabilities of a marching band, this new category has allowed smaller schools like Salem High School a greater opportunity to be noticed.

"A good marching band show requires a massive amount of moving parts to come together in perfect harmony, both in their notes and on the field," said Rep. Davisson. "I was proud and honored to be able to present this resolution for the band and enjoyed the opportunity to visit with them at the Statehouse."

The theme of the band's show was "It's About Time," with music by J.R. Trimpe. The repertoire for the show included "Tick Tock," "Hourglass" and "Chronos." The band is led by directors Bonnie Harmon and Richard L. Trueblood.

The show that won the ISSMA award was also played by Salem at multiple invitational competitions this past year, where it won Best Music, Visual, General Effect, and Percussion at the Paoli Invitational; Best Music, Visual, General Effect, Percussion, and Auxiliary at the North Harrison Invitational; and Best Percussion and Auxiliary at the Floyd Central Invitational.

Rep. Davisson represents parts of Washington, Orange, Lawrence, Jackson, Clark and Harrison Counties. He serves as the Vice-Chairman of Public Health and as a member of Ways and Means.
