(PAOLI) - The Lost River Career Cooperative/Paoli High School Robotics Club will participate in a state-qualifying tournament Feb. 15 in Indianapolis.
The club competed Jan. 17-18 in Lock Tight Night, sponsored by Cummins, Loctite and Visual Edge at Columbus Signature Academy in Columbus.
The team participated in the Minebot Game, which required moving 2-inch and 4-inch blocks to cross lava, place a block in a fenced area to take away half the other team's points and build a tower in a designated location.
Students arrived on the evening of Jan. 17 and the details of the game were revealed. The team had 12 hours to build and program a robot to compete in the game Saturday at 8 am. After qualifying, students went up against a robot built by a team of engineers from Cummins.
"The robot they built could balance on the front wheels to extend its reach for the game pieces and could push itself upright if it got knocked over," said the students' teacher, Cis Zehr. "Most of the competitions we participate in, the games are known in advance and they have weeks to build and program. This competition they take a robotic kit and start from scratch. They are very talented."
The Robotics Club meets every Thursday after school at the annex in the engineering lab.
