Officials Warn About Health Hazards Of Shoveling Snow

(UNDATED) - State health officials warn Hoosiers digging their way out of the latest snowfall could face health hazards without proper precautions.

Officials recommend wrapping up in layer and stretching and to avoid heavy meals and smoking, before heading out to shovel.

State Health Commissioner William VanNess says anyone with a heart problem or over 50 should talk to their doctor before strenuous activities like shoveling snow.

He added cold weather strains the heart. He says pushing the snow instead of lifting it is safer.
