North Lawrence Community Schools To Extend School Days

Last updated on Friday, February 28, 2014

(BEDFORD) - Students in North Lawrence Community Schools will be going to school an extra 30 minutes beginning Monday.

The school board voted Thursday night to extend the school day 30 minutes each day beginning Monday until the end of the day March 18.

If another snow day is missed, the extended 30 minutes will be added to 12 days in April.

Superintendent Gary Conner told the board students had missed 10 days and had 12 delays or early dismissals.

According to state law students must attend 180 of instruction.

The Indiana Department of Education granted North Lawrence waivers for two missed days. Six days were built into the school calendar, but that still leaves students short of the mandated number of days they must attend.

The plan is for students in grades three to eight to prepare for ISTEP testing. Younger students will focus on accelerated reading other skills and BNL high school students will have the 30 minutes spread throughout the course of the day, spending an additional 4 minutes in each class.

Board members also approved May 30 as the date for the graduation ceremony at Bedford North Lawrence High School.
