Last updated on Monday, February 17, 2014

(BLOOMINGTON) - An elderly couple who were found dead of an apparent murder-suicide Friday at Medowwood Retirement Community’s health pavilion were married.

Monroe County Nicole Meyers says 77-year-old Robert White and his 76-year-old wife Ruth died at the scene from gunshot wounds.

Meyer says Robert shot his wife twice and then shot himself. Bloomington Police found a .38-caliber handgun in Ruth's room.

Police were called to the retirement community Friday at 11:40 a.m. According to police Ruth had just moved into an assisted care room at Meadowood. Her husband did not live there. When police arrived at North Tamarak Trial, they found both bodies in Ruth's room. Ruth shared the room with another person who was not injured or threatened during the incident.

Bloomington Detective Jason Shaevitz says several shots were fired from the handgun. They also found Robert's Mercury sedan parked in a handicapped space near the entrance of the facility.

Executive Director at Meadowood Larry Diersing declined to comment on the incident, but did provide this written statement on Friday:

"This morning (Friday) we had a tragic incident involving a resident of our community. Because of state and federal privacy law, we cannot provide any further information about this resident. We take the safety and well being of our residents very seriously and are cooperating with the authorities to investigate this matter. We will provide whatever support and assistance we can to our residents, families and staff during this challenging time."
