(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington Police arrested a 57-year-old Mitchell man who was freed from the driver’s seat of an inverted car in the 700 block of West Seventh Street, Saturday.
Officers found an unauthorized handgun and that Jackie Lee Bundy was driving under the influence of alcohol.
Bundy was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a blood-alcohol content of .15, leaving the scene of an accident and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. His bond was set at $2,000 surety or $5000 cash.
Bundy's arrest came after police were called to the corner of West 11th Street and North Fairview Street at 4:55 p.m. A car had reportedly been involved in crashes with both a building and another vehicle before becoming inverted on the sidewalk, according to Sgt. James Batcho of the Bloomington police.
A witness reported hearing a crash in the 600 block of North Fairview Street and seeing a white Chevrolet Cavalier hit a dumpster, pushing it into a building, police said. The witness reported approaching to try to get the Chevrolet's driver to turn off the vehicle. But the Chevrolet drove away, and the witness followed to find it inverted on West 11th Street, police said.
Two other witnesses in the 700 block of West 11th Street told police they were inside when they heard a crash, according to Batcho. The two witnesses looked outside to see the Chevrolet in contact with the rear end of their own vehicle, they told police. They said the Chevrolet backed away before driving about half a block and running off the south side of 11th Street, police said. It drove into telephone pole guide wires and flipped, the two witnesses told officers.
First responders extracting Bundy from the inverted vehicle witnessed him trying to place his left hand over his pocket, police said. They found him to be in possession of a Bryco 9 mm semi-automatic handgun, according to officers.
Bundy had no Indiana handgun permit. Police learned he had a prior felony conviction.
He was being slightly combative with first responders, prompting a police officer to ride with him in an ambulance bound for the hospital, Batcho said. The officer reported that Bundy had glassy eyes and slurred speech. The officer also reported detecting the odor of alcohol.
A paramedic told police Bundy had been fastened into the Chevrolet's driver's seat. First responders cut him out of the driver's seat belt, police said.
