(MITCHELL) - A Mitchell Community Planning Meeting will take place Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30pm at City Hall.

Residents can meet and share ideas with Indiana University Students who will spend this semester helping Mitchell develop a comprehensive plan for the city.

The project is a part of a course offering through the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, which is designed to address topics that integrate public policy, management and science/technology in an interdisciplinary framework.

The issues the students will examine in Mitchell include the development of a downtown corridor plan, brownfield mediation and reuse, the future use of the Opera House and possible tourism options.

Students will work in teams, focusing on economic development, planning or aesthetics, depending on their majors.

The class will spend its time focusing on Mitchell's planning assessment as the city works developing its comprehensive plan.

The School of Public and Environmental offers their services free of charge.

Frank Nierzwicki is the professor who will lead the students through the project. A professional certified planner, he has served the state, city of Bloomington and town of Ellettsville for more than 30 years. He is currently the professional development officer on the executive board for the Indiana chapter of the American Planning Association.
