(BEDFORD) - Mike Branham has announced his republican candidacy for Lawrence County Sheriff. Branham will face Neil Hayes and Sam Shaw, who have also filed on the Republican ticket in the May Primary.
Branham is a lifelong resident of Lawrence County, growing up in Marshall Township.
Branham and his wife Amber just celebrated their20th anniversary and have three children. Tanner is a sophomore at Indiana State University, Taylor is a freshman at Ivy Tech, and Emilee is a junior at Bedford North Lawrence High School.
Branham graduated from Bedford North Lawrence High School, attended Rose Hulman
Institute of Technology, and will complete his Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Oakland City University this year. He has received extensive specialized training during his law enforcement career: including the Indiana Sheriff's Association New Sheriff School, the National Sheriff's Association Jail Operations School, and recently graduated from the Police Executive Leadership Academy, where he was voted by his peers as showing the most leadership.
Branham began his career at the Sheriff's Department 22 years ago as a jail officer and moved up through the ranks, garnering more and more responsibility throughout his career. He currently serves as Chief Deputy. This is his fourth year in that position.
As Chief Deputy he is actively involved in the day to day operations of the department, including law enforcement, corrections, dispatch, and court security. He is actively involved in the budgeting and planning process.
Branham has also served three terms on the Lawrence County Council and is currently involved in several local and statewide committees, including the Lawrence County Courthouse Security Committee, the Domestic Violence Coalition, the School Safety Commission and the Workforce and Education Advisory Council. He also serves on the statewide Joint Task Force for Courthouse Security through the Indiana Judicial Center.
Branham has very specific plans for the direction of the department, including an increased focus on community oriented policing, an emphasis on drug enforcement, and establishing a program to educate senior citizens on how to avoid becoming victims of crime.
