Fire Destroys Vacant Bloomington Home

Last updated on Tuesday, February 25, 2014

(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington Fire Department firefighters battled a blaze Monday night in the 1000 block of East Miller Drive.

When firefighters arrived at the scene just after 9:30 p.m. flames were shooting out of the home near the surrounding trees and Captain Tania Daffron says firefighters did a defensive attack - extinguishing the blaze and protecting surrounding property.

The home was not occupied and the name of the owner was not known at the time of the fire.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze, stopping it before it spread to homes to the east and the apartments west of the burning home.

Sparks from the burning home did land on a detached garage on the neighboring property and the siding on Huntington Gardens Place apartments was melting from the extensive heat.

A police detective and BFD investigators are investigating what started the suspicious fire.

Daffron says the blaze is suspicious because the building was under construction and he doesn't believe there was electricity running to the home.
