(BEDFORD) - Bedford Fire Department was called to fire after a motorist reported heavy smoke in the area of G Street behind Rulers just before 2 a.m. this morning.
According to Bedford Fire Chief Jon Wagner, firefighters at first could not locate the fire because of the heavy smoke in the area.
"Because of the barometric pressure the heavy smoke was hovering near the ground making visibility limited," Wagner says. "Firefighters found the fire at a home at 1710 G Street and made entry through a back door. They did two searches to see if anyone was inside and found no one."
They did find a Saint Bernard in a crate inside the home.
"The dog did not survive," Wagner says.
Firefighters located the fire in a room filled with electronic equipment.
"I believe the owner was a ham radio operator and had lots of equipment in the room where the fire started," Wagner says. "Firefighters did a great job of containing the fire to that one room, but there was heavy smoke and water damage throughout the home."
The owner Charles Delthia was not home when the blaze started.
"He arrived at the scene while firefighters were there," Wagner says.
BFD Investigator David Wright will be on the scene this morning to investigate the cause of the fire that did extensive damage to the one-story home.
