(BEDFORD) - A fire Sunday night destroyed the home of Amanda and Scott Hoffman, at 892 Bartlettsville Road.
The Hoffmans rent the home, owned by Dr. George Sorrels.
Firefighters from Shawswick, Pleasant Run, Guthrie, Marshall, Indian Creek and Oolitic Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the blaze at 5:41 p.m. TOPES also responded to lend support to firefighters.
When firefighters arrived the home was engulfed in flames, but the family was able to escape unharmed.
"The home, garage and a smaller outbuilding were destroyed," says. Shawswick VFD Fire Chief Bob Brown. "When we arrived flames were shooting out of the roof of the home and garage."
Amanda was the first to discover the fire after several motorists drove by the home blowing their horns.
"She says they just kept blowing and driving by so she decided something was wrong and went to investigate and that is when she discovered the garage on fire," Brown says. "The fire then spread to the roof of the house."
Fighting the fire was difficult.
"There were layers and layers of roofing," Brown says. "We just couldn't get the fire out because it was trapped between layers. No matter what we tired we just couldn't get to the fire. There was just nothing we could do."
One firefighter suffered a minor injury while fighting the fire.
Though the fire was difficult to extinguish, firefighters were able to save many of the families valuables including the family china.
"We got just about everything of value out of the home," Brown says. "We did our best to save as much as we could."
Firefighters finally had the fire extinguished just after midnight.
"But we were called back out early this morning after the fire rekindled," Brown says. "We were there for several hours."
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
