Couple Planned Deaths After They Could No Longer Care For Each Other

Last updated on Tuesday, February 18, 2014

(BLOOMINGTON) - Ruth Ann White and her husband Robert visited, then had lunch, before Robert shot and killed his wife and then himself this past Friday at the Meadowood Retirement Community.

The couple had been married 51 years.

According to Bloomington Police Department Sgt. Steve Kellams, Ruth Ann was moved into an assisted care room after 77-year-old Robert was admitted to the hospital.

After his release, he was no longer able to care for 76-year-old Ruth Ann at home so she had to stay at the healthcare facility.

On Friday morning, Robert came to visit Ruth Ann. They visited, had lunch in the community room and then returned to Ruth's room. That is where the fatal shots were fired.

Police say the couple had discussions about what they would do if they no longer could take care of each other.

Ruth was found on her bed with four gunshot wounds to the torso. Robert was found on the floor next to the bed with a single head shot. Both died in the room. A .38 caliber revolver was found on the floor.

There was another female resident in the room at the time of shooting, Kellams says. But because of her medical conditions, she was unable to provide the police with any information. She was not injured during the incident.
