County Council Approves Request To Purchase Wheelchair Lift For Courthouse

Last updated on Wednesday, February 26, 2014

(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Council gave their support for Sheriff Sam Craig to purchase a more expensive wheelchair lift for the courthouse.

Craig received two bids from the installation of the wheelchair lift at the north entrance of the courthouse.

"One bid was for $23,436 and the second was for $22,500," Craig says. "My concern is the company with the cheaper bids wants an installment of $11,250 now. I have a problem with spending the tax payer's money up front. I am a little uncomfortable with that. We could give them the money and the project not get done or the company file bankruptcy and the money would be gone. The second company, which is $936 more, has agreed to complete the project and receive payment after the project is inspected by us."

The council discussed the issue and councilman Jim Edwards agreed with Craig and made a motion to accept the higher bid.

In other business:

The council approved an additional appropriation of $1,721.25 for the sheriff. That money was to be used to pay the taxes on officer's uniform allowances.

Before the uniform allowance was a line item in the budget, but now the money comes from the public safety fund and the tax amount was not budgeted.

"The money is taxed as if it was a salary," Sam told the council. "Next year we will calculate the taxes into the budget."

Craig also asked to take $5,000 from the commissary fund, for this year to cover the cost of any attorney fees the department might have this year.

"The money would be to seek legal advice or to pay for legal fees," Craig says. "This way the funds will be available if it is needed."

Steve Gilbert, director of the Lawrence County Drug Abuse Council, asked to council to approve the Drug Free Community Budget of $41,619. The funds are distributed to 14 different agencies to help battle the war against drugs in the county.

Approved an additional appropriation for the Highway Department for $$267, 640.

Approved an additional appropriation of $3,015.82 for the Prosecutor's Office.

The council also approved the following appointments for 2014
