(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Election Board denied a candidate challenge and another candidate on the primary election ballot was arrested.
The Election Board met Wednesday afternoon to discuss a candidate challenge filed by voter Sam Shaw. Shaw filed a challenge against Democratic sheriff candidate Bill Allen.
Shaw filed the challenge because of partisan discrimination of the Democratic chairman to permit one of required criteria for candidacy while denial of another with the same criteria for candidacy.
Shaw is also on the May Primary ballot as a Republican candidate for sheriff.
Shaw was not present at the hearing, but Bill Allen and his wife were. Also present was Sheriff Sam Craig and Democrat candidate for sheriff, Darin Kinser.
The Election Board, which consists of Republicans Myron Rainey, Gordon Emery and Democrat Don Henderson found there was no merit by state statue to Shaw's claims and denied the challenge.
After the meeting, Sheriff Sam Craig arrested Darin Kinser, on a civil warrant.
Kinser was escorted from the courthouse and taken to jail. He posted a $171.87 bond, the amount he owned for the civil attachment and was released from jail.
The judgment stems from a claim filed May 7 by city attorney Greg Pittman on behalf of Bedford Utilities Department. Court documents state Kinser was served by the sheriff's department on May 10. On June 21, Kinser failed to attend the court hearing, and the judge ordered him to pay the utility bill, plus court costs, for a total of $171.87.
Another hearing was conducted Aug. 16, and Kinser again failed to appear in court. That's when the judge issued the civil writ of attachment against Kinser.
